The topicality and currentness in German news

Just saw that German news reported about 13 Mexicans having falled victims to a landslide.

I really have to wonder about both, topicality and currentness in German news, as this information was in Mexican news already several weeks ago and moreover even domestically it was not such a big deal.
German news still seem to be stuck in the summer's "silly season"...
