| Day trip from Zacatecas (E) to La Quemada (F) |
La Quemada is an archeological site, less than an hour away from Zacatecas. As long as you speak Spanish it's pretty easy to take the right
colectivo (kind of a small public bus). They drop you on the highway and from there it's not more than a 20 minute walk in a beautiful landscape full of cactus plants.

The site was sooo amazing which made it incredible that there was
nobody apart from us. We got a free tour from one of the workers. He explained us that just two years ago each of the guides led some 10,000 tourists each year. But due to some incidents with the drug cartels, the fear now kept away most of them. So sad. Well, for us the only "dangerous" thing was the fact that there are apparently lots of rattle snakes. But we didn't see any of them, as we sticked to the recommended areas.
On our whole travel the drug war didn't affect us at all, there was just a lot of military presence (especially in the north). But after one semester in Mexico we are more or less used to see heavily armed soldiers, so this doesn't give us a feeling of insecurity.
